Press Release
The Directors of Marlborough New York are delighted to present a selection of recent works on paper by Gustavo Pérez Monzón in Gallery 105. This will be the artist’s first exhibition with Marlborough. Recognized as one of the leading Conceptual artists of his native Cuba, Pérez Monzón participated in the mythic Volumen I exhibition of 1980 along with his former art professor, Tomás Sánchez. Pérez Monzón is recognized for his austere compositions and site-specific installations.
In 2015, the resurgence of his work was catalyzed by a solo exhibition at The National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, which later traveled to the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO). The works on paper shown in this exhibition evince the same formal preoccupations as his early conceptual work. Many of the works oscillate between geometric abstractions and delicately gestural surfaces that range in tone from transparent to metallic. In an interview in 2018, Pérez Monzón explains that he was "interested in the idea of a world of invisible connections and meanings, as expressed in ancient sciences such as numerology, the Kabbalah, and certain esoteric schools…the way in which geometric forms express abstract, philosophical, and even emotional concepts."
Out of an abundance of caution, Marlborough New York strongly encourages appointments for the month of January 2022. Appointments may be scheduled by calling + 1 (212) 541 4900 and/or emailing mny@marlboroughgallery.com. Kindly note that proof of vaccination and masks are required for entry.
