About

Marlborough is pleased to participate in INK Miami 2021 with an exhibition of prints and drawings by Alex Katz (b. 1927). The presentation will celebrate the critical role Marlborough played in advancing the iconic New York artist’s career. In addition to representing Katz for nearly thirty years, Marlborough Graphics served as one of the primary producers of the artist’s prints from 1972 through 1978 and continued to co-produce his prints through the mid-1990s.

Katz first began experimenting with printmaking in 1947 while attending The Cooper Union, where he received his BA in 1949. Though Katz would move away from printmaking for nearly a decade, he returned to the medium in the mid-1960s. Since then, Katz has created more than 400 editions of lithographs, etchings, silkscreens, woodcuts, and linoleum cuts.

Complementing the selection of some of Katz’s most recognizable prints, there will be a number of drawings on view. Of the artist’s creative process, art critic Carter Ratcliffe writes, “Katz does not wander through the world with a sketchbook in hand, waiting for some object or effect of light to catch his attention. First he decides to paint a picture, then he makes a few drawings specifically for that work…Before he picks up his pencil, he has a good idea of what he wants to do.”

Alex Katz’s work has been featured in more than seven hundred exhibitions and can be found in over one hundred public collections worldwide. The artist will be the subject of a major retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2022.
